How do Google AI Overviews pick their sources?
Passage selection, not page ranking
This is the single most important thing to understand about AI Overviews. Google is not summarising the top ten results; it is assembling an answer from passages retrieved across a fan of related queries. A page can be cited without ranking well for anything you were targeting.
The practical consequence is that narrow, specific pages punch far above their weight. A page answering one sub-question thoroughly can be cited in an Overview for a much broader query it could never rank for.
Google's own position
Google's guidance is that optimising for AI Overviews is still SEO — the same crawlability, quality, and helpfulness systems apply. There is no separate ranking pipeline to game.
What changes is the unit of competition. Instead of one page per keyword, you want coverage across the cluster of sub-questions a topic fans out into, each answered cleanly enough to be extracted on its own.

Query fan-out is when an AI engine breaks a single question into several related sub-queries, searches each one separately, and synthesises the results into one answer. Asking for 'the best CRM for a small agency' might fan out into searches for best CRM 2026, CRM pricing for small teams, and agency CRM reviews.
Yes — arguably more, in a narrower way. Google's AI features run on the same core ranking and quality systems as search, and the engines that browse retrieve from search results. If you are not crawlable, indexable, and credible, you are not in the pool an AI answer is assembled from.
Treat it as passage-level SEO. AI Mode fans a query out into sub-queries and assembles an answer from passages, so the goal is clean, self-contained answers to each sub-question rather than one page ranking for the head term. Most pages cited in AI Mode do not rank in the organic top ten.
