What is query fan-out in AI search?
Why it changes what you should publish
Under fan-out, one page targeting one keyword competes for only one branch of the fan. Coverage across the whole cluster is what gets a brand named consistently, because your name has more chances to appear in the retrieved set.
This is why thin coverage of many adjacent questions frequently outperforms one long, comprehensive guide. The guide answers everything but is retrieved for one sub-query; the cluster is retrieved for several.
How to find your fan
Start from the question a buyer actually asks, then write down the sub-questions someone would need answered before they could act on it: price, alternatives, fit for their situation, credibility, how to switch. Those are the branches.
Each branch deserves its own answer with its own heading — whether as separate pages or clearly delineated sections. The requirement is that a retriever can lift one branch without the surrounding context.

Because selection happens at passage level, most cited pages do not rank in the organic top ten for the original query.
Pages that answer one question directly, near the top, under a heading that matches how the question is asked. Comparison tables, specification lists, dated statistics, and short definitional passages are extracted most often, because each can be lifted whole and remain true without the surrounding page.
Only if it adds coverage of questions you did not previously answer. Volume alone does nothing — an engine retrieves one passage per sub-query, so a second article on a question you already answer well competes with yourself. Breadth across a topic's fan-out beats depth on any single point.
