How AI engines work
How does Perplexity choose its sources?
Perplexity is retrieval-first, which is good news
Because Perplexity searches on every query rather than relying on training memory, its citations respond to changes on the web within days rather than months. A newly published page that answers a question cleanly can be cited almost immediately.
That makes Perplexity the fastest engine to move, and the best early signal that a content change is working. If a change lifts your Perplexity citations and nothing else, it is usually working — the other engines are simply slower.
What gets a page cited
Put the answer in the first hundred words, under a heading that matches the question. Perplexity extracts passages, not pages, so a buried answer loses to a shallow page that leads with one.
Show a date. Undated pages are systematically disadvantaged on any query with a temporal element — and far more queries carry an implicit 'currently' than most publishers assume.

ChatGPT recommends brands it can find corroborating evidence for at answer time. When browsing is active it runs web searches, reads the top results, and names brands that appear repeatedly across independent, trustworthy sources. Without browsing it falls back on patterns learned in training, which favour brands with a large, consistent published footprint.
Pages that answer one question directly, near the top, under a heading that matches how the question is asked. Comparison tables, specification lists, dated statistics, and short definitional passages are extracted most often, because each can be lifted whole and remain true without the surrounding page.
Yes, more than in traditional search. Many questions carry an implicit 'right now', and engines resolve that by preferring pages with visible, recent dates. Undated content is systematically disadvantaged — an engine cannot tell whether it is current, so it reaches for something it can date.
