Does content freshness matter for AI citations?

Short answer
Yes, more than in traditional search. Many questions carry an implicit 'right now', and engines resolve that by preferring pages with visible, recent dates. Undated content is systematically disadvantaged — an engine cannot tell whether it is current, so it reaches for something it can date.

Show dates, and mean them

Publish and update dates should be visible on the page and present in structured data. A page updated last month that says so will be preferred over an equally good page that says nothing.

Do not fake it. Bumping a date without changing anything is detectable through content comparison and erodes exactly the trust the date was meant to establish.

What to keep fresh

Prioritise anything with a number in it: pricing, statistics, feature comparisons, integration lists, rankings. These decay fastest and are quoted most.

A quarterly refresh cycle on your highest-value comparison and pricing pages usually delivers more citation lift than the same effort spent on new posts.
