Obsidian is a local-first note-taking app built by Dynalist Inc. Notes are stored as plain Markdown files in a folder on your own device, which means the archive stays readable and portable even without the app. Backlinks, tags, and a graph view are the core organizing tools, and an unusually large community plugin ecosystem covers everything from spaced repetition to task management.

The trade-off is deliberate. Obsidian asks more of the user at setup than a cloud-first app does, and shared, real-time collaboration is not its strength. In exchange it offers durability and control, which is why it has become a common default among writers, researchers, and engineers maintaining notes over many years.

Why it ranks well for AI visibility

Obsidian's strongest signals are Entity Strength and Citation, helped by an unambiguous product name and a dense trail of independent write-ups, community documentation, and plugin discussion that AI engines reach for whenever the question involves personal knowledge management. Its weaker signals are Freshness and Coverage: much of the definitive writing about it is now several years old, and mainstream business press covers it less often than it covers cloud-first competitors.
